What is genetic testing?
Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins, and can be used to test or diagnose a range of medical problems before a child is born. Genetic DNA testing in India has been a success in just a few years and the results of a genetic test can confirm or deny a suspicion of genetic status or help determine the risk of developing or transmitting a genetic disorder.
What are the different types of genetic tests?
There are various types of Genetic DNA testing, but at DNA Forensics Laboratory Private Limited provides only four types of Genetic Testing include:
1. Non Invasive tests for Trisomy 21, 18 & 13 (NIPT | NO SEX DETERMINATION):
NIPT is a new prenatal screening test that provides pregnant women with accurate information about their baby’s genetic health without the risk of invasive testing such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. It also detects Whole Genome – 23 pairs of human chromosomes, Common Chromosomal abnormality: Trisomy 13 (Patau’s Syndrome) Trisomy 18 (Edwards’ Syndrome) Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome), Microdeletions – 20 specific diseases – DiGeorge syndrome, Williams syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsy (HNPP), Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, Miller-Dieker syndrome and many more.
2. Genetic & Hormone predisposition test:
All humans share the same set of genes, but the precise DNA sequence of these genes differs slightly from one individual to another (from about 0.1 to 0.2%). Although these differences take into account factors such as the different color of hair, eyes and skin, they can also be the cause of genetic diseases or susceptibility to disease. A disease causing a change in the DNA of a gene is called a mutation.
We cover two types of Genetic & Hormone predisposition test namely Diagnostic tests, Genetic screening tests: Prenatal screening, Newborn screening and Carrier screening.
3. BRCA 1& 2 Genetic analysis:
The BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify the tumor or harmful changes (mutations) in either BRCA1 or BRCA2 breast cancer susceptibility genes.
A test of the BRCA gene determines whether you carry a mutation inherited from the BRCA gene. If you do, your result is positive and your doctor can help you understand your cancer risk. However, you can learn that you have a variant of the gene on which doctors are not sure. It may or may not be associated with an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. This result is known as a variant of uncertain significance.
4. Ancestral Genetics:
Ancestry DNA test is based on thousands of samples from populations around the world to detect DNA markers that can provide clues to your ancestral history and allow you to find your DNA’s origin by taking deeper dig into your family history beyond other ancestry DNA tests. We combine the latest research in genetics with a new technique of ancestral tracking which is called Geographic Population Structure (GPS) to identify your DNA origin precisely.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of genetic testing?
- Genetic testing can be beneficial, whether or not it identifies a mutation.
- Sense of relief from uncertainty
- In-depth knowledge of your cancer risk
- Information to make informed medical and lifestyle decisions
- Ability to help educate other family members about potential risks
- Helps in identifying if your child has an impending syndrome, disease, or genetic disorder
- Pinpoint your ancestry—even to the town or city
- Trace your paternal/maternal ancestral migration routes
- Reveal your ethnicity/admixture/ ancient origins
- Genetic testing generally has a low risk of having a negative impact on your physical health. However, it can be difficult financially or emotionally to know your results.
- Genetic testing cannot tell you everything about hereditary diseases.
- Tests can increase anxiety and stress in some people.
- Tests do not eliminate the risk of cancer in a person
- In some cases, results may be inconclusive or uncertain.

When is the test report available?
We keep our turnaround time tight because we understand that waiting for your results can be stressful and results are ready in 5 business days. Some tests have a longer turnaround time like prenatal paternity, NIPT and genetic predisposition tests.
What is the accuracy of Genetic DNA testing?
We guarantee to provide 99.999% accurate tests result. We use 24 standard genetic markers for providing highly accurate DNA test results.
Our testing laboratory is accredited by the NABL and follows quality standard ISO 17025. Second, Two teams independently process the samples for every case and compare their findings to ensure they are the same. Third, our laboratory’s expert scientists or doctors oversee the operation and personally review and sign all test reports. You can be assured that our methods and practices adhere to the strictest standards in the nation.
