There are many situations in which you could be asked to identify your race- as part of your medical history during a doctor’s visit, in a genetic diagnosis, in an application for entry into college, and in various government service forms.
Ancestry DNA test is a product of extensive scientific research combining works of geneticists, anthropologists, and social scientists. A lot of effort has been placed into ensuring that the methods used in the test are scientifically and statistically sound. Ancestry DNA test is based on testing thousands of samples from populations around the world for DNA markers that can provide clues about your ancestral history.
When discussing ancestry DNA testing, we often refer to three types of DNA in your cells: the Y chromosome, used in direct paternal lineage testing, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), used in direct maternal lineage testing, and the autosomes—non-sex chromosomes that make up the complement of your genome and unlock the family story in our DNA.
DNA Ancestral origin Paternal linage testing
The test relies on the DNA that is passed from father to son relatively unchanged through many generations. One could say that by examining these key parts of our DNA, our paternal history could be traced as far back as the first peoples who populated the earth. It is possible to perform a Paternal Lineage Test tracing direct male ancestry by examining the Y chromosome. Scientific data shows that modern humans evolved as far back as 400,000 years ago in Africa and started moving outward. Special sections on the Y chromosome, called short tandem repeats (STRs), are examined to determine a person’s Y haplogroup—revealing the geographic origins of his ancestors as evidenced by common DNA markers.
Note: Only males have the Y chromosome, but if a female wants to find out about her paternal ancestry, she can ask her brother, father, or other relative along the same paternal line to take the test.
DNA Ancestral origin Maternal linage testing
The maternal lineage test is based on the fact that mitochondrial DNA is passed down from mother to child relatively unchanged through several generations. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is found outside the nucleus. Regardless of whether you are male or female, your entire mitochondrial DNA comes from your mother. During conception, only the male nuclear genetic material (i.e. the 23 chromosomes) enters the egg. As such, the fertilized egg only contains mtDNA from the mother. Due to this maternal mechanism of inheritance of mtDNA, we can perform a Maternal Lineage Test by examining markers on the mtDNA. mtDNA contains markers that can be traced to our early ancestors and where they settled thousands of years ago. Results of a maternal lineage test are expressed in terms of haplogroups genetic groups of people who share the same set of DNA markers and can be traced to a certain geographic area where they settled at a particular point of time in human history.
Ancestry DNA Origins
Many other members of your family influence most of your ancestral makeup, and the paternal and maternal linage tests give you information about the direct lineages. This third test, Ancestry DNA Origin, fills in the gap by giving you the complete picture, taking into account contributions by relatives outside of the direct maternal and paternal lines. All those are represented ancestral estimates for four populations: European, Indigenous American, Sub-Saharan African, and East Asian. It is important to remember that these “populations” really refer to a group of people with shared ancestry and that there is natural migration between these groups over time. The Ancestry DNA Origins test examines markers found across your 22 autosome pairs. As you may recall, you receive one copy of each pair of chromosomes from your mother and one copy from your father. You may find that some of your ancestral proportions may not be what you expected. Interpreting your results in the context of your physical appearance is also discussed towards the end of this page.
GPS Origins Ancestry Test
The GPS Origins™ ancestry DNA test allows you to find your DNA’s origin by taking deeper into your family history beyond other ancestry DNA tests. GPS Origins™ has a capacity to discover your ancestry history related to particular towns, cities, or villages. Traditional ancestry DNA test has a capability to detect broad continental regions related to your DNA with limited information. GPS Origins™ combines the latest research in genetics with a new technique of ancestral tracking which is called Geographic Population Structure (GPS) to identify your DNA origin precisely. It includes a complete ancestral inheritance including migrated roots with important historical events and date stamps to describe your DNA evolution over time. The GPS Origins™ test is highly accurate but it could be affected by the origin of the family. If both of your parents are originated from the same country or same geographical location, the result of the test would be accurate but differs slightly if both parents are originated from different continentals. The test can be carried out using a mouth swab sample analysis.
